Pretoria, 11 June 2019: Now don’t let that scare you off! Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections use your own blood – so your own growth factors can literally make you younger! These are the words of Dr Chris Giezing, founder of Aesthetic Lab in Hazelwood, Pretoria.

Reports referring to PRP treatments date back to 2011, but it gained huge popularity and extensive coverage when Kim Kardashian famously underwent the procedure in 2013. The “vampire facial” is booming as a trend in the field of aesthetics.

Procedure

What is PRP treatment and how does it work? Blood is drawn from the patient and then placed in a vial. The vial is spun rapidly in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells and the plasma. Often referred to as ‘liquid gold’, the platelet-rich plasma is then removed and re-injected. Aesthetic Lab uses a device or free-hand to re-inject it into the facial skin of the patient. A little bit of blood shows on the face - hence the fact that some people call it a “vampire facial”!

While swelling may occur for up to three hours after the procedure is done, no downtime is required. The procedure is not painful, but mild discomfort can be addressed with local anaesthetic creams. The skin will need one to two days to recover from the post-procedure redness, but results can be seen after five days to a week. The renewal effect of a PRP procedure can last for more than a year, but it differs from person to person.

It is crucial that all aesthetic clinics use trained and experienced personnel in the PRP technique. Heleen Marx, co-owner and practice manager says that research and background checks related to experience is a big priority. Staff at Aesthetic Lab are very experienced in this procedure. Dr Chris emphasises: ‘’Ensure that the procedure is properly explained to you and that you are knowledgeable on the outcome so that the treatment meets your expectations.”

Benefits

Dr Chris says that these platelets, when injected into your skin, boosts cell regeneration and promotes collagen growth. There are minor drawbacks to a ‘’vampire facial’’, as it is your own blood that’s being ‘recycled’. The “vampire facial” greatly assists in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It is also used in the treatment of sun damaged skin, the tone and texture of the skin, scarring, dark circles under the eyes, rosacea, dehydration, dull skin and even stretch marks.

The procedure is recommended for women between the ages of 30 and 60. Beyond this age the texture, suppleness and healing ability of the skin deteriorates.

You don’t have to worry about all those pesky little problems - we vampire them away. Now you too can confidently walk in the daylight and show off your smoother and brighter skin.
